In fact, according to Consumer Reports, “electric car owners continue to report far more problems with their vehicles than owners of conventional or hybrid cars.”
How bad is the situation for some drivers? The Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Survey showed that, on average, electric cars from the past three years had nearly 80% more problems than conventional cars.
The survey looked at 20 potential problem areas, including electric motors, engines, transmissions and infotainment systems. EV owners report the most common issues with the battery and charging systems, along with flaws in how body panels and interior parts fit together, according to CBS News.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
Why does this car make the list? Overall, Mercedes-Benz ranked among the lowest brands in terms of reliability according to Consumer Reports, which said “brakes feel worryingly spongy” with the EQS 580.
Rivian R1S
Consumer Reports said some of the problems with electric vehicles come from the fact that many of them today are made by older automakers that are new to the technology or by companies new to the auto industry. Rivian might be an example of this here.
Rivian is ranked among the least reliable brands by Consumer Reports. This includes the R1S and R1T models. When it comes specifically to the R1S, according to the report, “the ride is too harsh, the electric motor’s whirr is noticeable at low speeds, and regenerative braking is too strong, making it difficult to drive the SUV smoothly.”
Volkswagen ID.4
Volkswagen is also ranked among the lowest brands in terms of reliability. Among its offerings is the ID.4 EV. Although this car is spacious, it is also said to have very unintuitive controls and a slow-to-react and distracting infotainment system.
