This incident comes on the heels of a major revelation last month, where energy was stolen within Energy distribution companies The distribution companies reportedly caused a loss of PKR 438 billion to the national exchequer. The sources indicated that these losses constituted a large portion of the total annual bills amounting to PKR 723 billion.
The power department has identified the lowest-performing distribution companies, highlighting companies in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Peshawar, Quetta and tribal areas in its records. On April 7, the Punjab Energy Ministry raised concerns about power distribution companies charging government institutions excessive fees, which it saw as a burden on the provincial exchequer.
The ministry pointed out that Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (ESCO) were charging excessive fees on… government departments.
The department stated that there are more than 102,000 electrical connections in various departments of the governorate, with a large discrepancy between the actual consumption and the billed amounts. For FY 2022-23, the district administrations consumed electricity worth over PKR 1.91 billion but were billed at PKR 76 billion.
In response to this problem, the federal government agreed to deploy Federal Investigating Officers (FIA) to electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to reduce energy theft and promote revenue recovery. This measure was in line with the demands of the International Monetary Fund, according to what was reported by ARY News.
