A multinational company estimates a $1 million investment in a new power plant in South Carolina

Norwegian multinational Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy generator, plans to build a new small hydroelectric power station (PCH) in Santa Catarina. The project has an installed capacity of 30 MW and is planned to be implemented on the Canoas River, between the cities of Curitibanos and São José do Cerrito, in Serra.

The company, headquartered in Florianópolis, Brazil, estimates an investment of R$173 million in the structure, an amount that also takes into account the implementation of a substation and transmission line. The information is contained in the environmental impact study made available by the Environmental Institute (IMA).

The document also stipulates an implementation schedule of 24 months, from the date of issuance of the installation license. It is expected that these businesses will generate 180 job opportunities. Once the PCH is ready, it will be operated remotely from the Statkraft control center in Florianópolis.

The company says in the studies that the main goal of PCH Canoas is to generate electrical energy in an interconnected manner with the National Integrated System (SIN), through the captive or free market, “with the aim of contributing to meeting the demand for electrical energy in the country.” The state, and in line with government studies and planning for the sector.”

After the studies and environmental impact reports were published in official media, on December 29, IMA-SC opened a 45-day period to receive comments on the studies, project or planned activity.

Statkraft has been present in Brazil since 2009, and has a strong presence in the renewable energy generation sector. There are 19 assets in operation in the South-East, South and North-East regions and an installed capacity of 450.7 MW. In November, the company announced an agreement Get Enerfín Spanish. The deal, worth €1.8 billion, includes nine wind farms and other projects under construction in the country.
