Lima.- In a distinguished initiative that reinforces the commitment to sustainability and the adoption of renewable energy, Enel Generación Perú and Backus, the leader of the national beer industry, announced their alliance to provide 100% renewable energy in the group’s breweries. Starting in 2024. This agreement highlights BACOS’ firm commitment to the efficient use of energy and its contribution to the sustainable development of the country, through responsible energy management.
It should be noted that Backus will certify its renewable energy consumption through the International Renewable Energy Certification (I-REC), offered by Enel Generación Perú and certified by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the accounting standard for the carbon footprint. It is used by major companies worldwide as a convenient tool to demonstrate effective emission reductions in energy supply contracts. This initiative is a tangible example of Bacús’ leadership in implementing sustainable practices in Peru’s beer sector and lays the foundations for the future of the industry seeking carbon neutrality in its operations.
“At Bacchus, we are committed to sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint. “This certification is an important step towards our goal of operating in a more environmentally sustainable way, as well as an important element of our overall corporate social responsibility strategy,” commented Alejandra Campero, Procurement and Sustainability Director at Backus.
For his part, Marco Fragalli, Regional Director of Enel Perú, added: “We are proud to be allies of Backus and certify the consumption of its electrical energy to operate its plants; In this way we contribute to the conversion of its energy, which will come from the Wayra Extension wind power plant. “Generating electricity through renewable sources is compatible with more efficient energy management and thus with reduced operating costs.”
Through the electricity supply contract signed by the two companies, Enel Generación Perú will supply power of up to 28.50 MW from the Wayra Extension wind power plant. This achievement will allow Backus to reduce its carbon footprint and operate more efficiently and sustainably, generating benefits for both the company and the environment.
The International Renewable Energy Certification offered by Enel Generación Perú guarantees Backus’s annual energy consumption from 2024, and for the duration of its contract, demonstrating its production’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Likewise, this will allow the brewery to avoid approximately 22 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, representing an important step towards mitigating climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Pacos has become the first brewing group in Peru to source 100% of its energy consumption through non-conventional renewable sources, setting a precedent for other companies in the country. This achievement reflects Bacchus’ ongoing commitment to sustainability and its leadership in implementing responsible business practices.
Through this new alliance, Enel Generación Perú will add 09 I’REC certificates and 51 green certificates, equivalent to approximately 2.3 TWh of energy per year. In 2023, Enel Generación Perú handed over I-REC certificates to companies in the country’s most important industries, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and providing clean energy to its customers. This initiative represents a first in the Peruvian beer sector, demonstrating Pacos’ leadership and vision in implementing sustainable practices.
