Boulder is launching a pilot program in hopes of making electric vehicles more accessible

BOULDER, Colo. — The city of Boulder announced Monday that it will launch a pilot program to make electric vehicles more accessible.

The program will offer two Nissan LEAF vehicles that people can use through Colorado CarShare. The use of Nissan LEAF cars will be subsidized for anyone living in affordable housing.

The city will also use charging stations with two-way electrical flow, which is different from a typical charger. Instead of drawing power from the electrical grid or building, power is exchanged between the car and the building.

“This program helps deliver the benefits of electric vehicles to all customers in the communities we serve, including those who do not drive or are electric. This project is a proof of concept for two-way charging,” said Huma Seth, director of clean transportation at Xcel Energy. To evaluate technology with the potential to enhance customer billing savings.

Together, we set a precedent for municipalities to integrate electric vehicles into their communities,” said Tony Posawatz, CEO of the company. The City of Boulder will fund Colorado CarShare memberships. Xcel Energy will give Colorado CarShare rebates for electric vehicles used in the program and fund the purchase and installation of two-way chargers.
