Rio – Elera Renováveis will expand the installed capacity of Brazil’s largest solar photovoltaic park, Janaúba, which was inaugurated in July in the state of Minas Gerais. Brookfield Group will invest R$1.2 billion to build another 422 MW in the project, which will increase from 1.2 GW to 1.6 GW of capacity.
Work is scheduled to begin in January 2024, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025, with approximately 4,000 direct and indirect jobs created during construction.
An additional 700,000 solar units will be installed, with a total of 2.9 million generating units. According to Elira, approximately 50% of the expansion capacity is already sold on the free market and with advanced negotiations to reach 70% of its sold capacity, as well as through self-production contracts.
The complex’s expansion area is more than 800 hectares, equivalent to 1,200 football fields, with the ability to provide energy to 970,000 homes. The project expects to reduce more than 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the environment.
“We currently have an installed operating capacity of 3.3 GW and projects in development of approximately 2.4 GW of installed capacity. In 2023 alone, we have integrated three 450 MW wind farms into our operational portfolio, as well as the Janoba Solar Park, as a result of two acquisitions and the completion of the construction of a park Ceredo Wind Energy, located in Rio Grande do Norte,” Fernando Mano, CEO of Elera Renováveis, informed in a statement.
