Enagás launches the Hydrogen Technological Observatory to promote technical progress in the field of renewable energy

During the opening of the “Enagás H2 Technical Day”, held today at Bertelsmann Space in Madrid, CEO Arturo Gonzalo announced the creation of a hydrogen technology observatory “to promote, deepen and share technical developments in this field”. “Renewable hydrogen”

Arturo Gonzalo highlighted the importance of the technology “in the face of the imminent development of the hydrogen market in Europe”, and added that “the Hydrogen Technology Observatory will be an open meeting point for the main agents of the hydrogen value chain”, describing the “Technical Day of Enagás H2” as the “first stone” of this forum. .

The event, promoted by Enagás, takes place after yesterday’s meeting in Madrid of participants in the H2GAR hydrogen transport technological development project (Readiness of hydrogen gas assets), composed of seven operators (Transportation system operators) Europeans: Fluxys, Gasunie, GRTGaz, National Grid, OGE, Snam, Enagás.

Proven technology

“Developing renewable hydrogen is quite technologically viable,” CEO Enagás noted, with wide-ranging challenges in areas such as aquatic product materials, instrumentation, compressors, storage in salt cavities, adapting existing networks and designing dedicated plants. Networking, maintenance, measurement and digitalization. He added: “Hydrogen has been transported via pipelines since 1938,” so “the technology has proven its efficiency and now the challenge is to expand its scope.”

The context is appropriate for this escalation, and in this sense, “Europe is clear about this and is increasing its ambition,” Arturo Gonzalo explained, explaining that if the European REPowerEU plan limits consumption by 2030 to 20 million tons of green hydrogen, half of which is produced in Europe, the Commission indicates European countries have already estimated that by 2040, EU production will reach 35 to 40 million tons.

On this path, Europe is progressing at an unprecedented pace with milestones such as the approval of the European Directive on Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Markets and the inclusion of hydrogen projects, for the first time, in the European List of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), published yesterday in the Bulletin of the European Union (OJEU). ).

In addition, Spain is playing a leading role through the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) and the appointment of Enagás as interim operator of the Spanish hydrogen backbone network. The estimated investment in Spain for this network and the European H2Med interconnection is €5.9 billion.

Expert contribution

The “Enagás H2 Technical Day” was attended by experts from the institutional, industrial, operational and regulatory fields. Following the opening by Enagás CEO, International Energy Agency (IEA) Analyst, Amalia Pizarro, will give a presentation entitled “State of the Art and Hydrogen Perspectives”, and Principal Engineer and Subject Matter Expert from Rosen, Daniel Sandana will give the presentation: “The Future of Industry Standards for Hydrogen Transport “.

During the morning several round tables will be held: the first one entitled “Regulatory challenges (regulation and legal technical standards) and their implications for the availability of mature technology”, moderated by the Director General of Engineering, Technology and Digitization and with participants from Enagás, Susana de Pablo, and the Secretary General of GIE, Boyana Achovski. , Policy and Market Director at Hydrogen Europe, Daniel Fraile, and President of Sedigas, Joan Batalla.

he General Director Maurizio Zangrande, representative of the Italian LNG company Snam, representative of H2Gar and Chairman of the Transport Committee of the International Gas Union (IGU), will moderate the table “Challenges in the sustainable development and construction of infrastructure”, where the global director will lead a discussion with the participation of Rosen Hydrogen, Marion Erdelin Pepler, Director of Subsea Systems and Timber Export, Robert Inglis, Industrial and Midstream Sales Director of MAN, Christian Brottel, H2 Sales and Circulation Director of NEA, Andrea Fragonara, Hydrogen Solutions Engineer of BH, Francesco Bini, and Sales and Marketing Director of Geostock, Carlos Gomez. .

The third roundtable, titled “Challenges of Process Management,” will be moderated by Enagás Infrastructure General Manager, Claudio Rodriguez, and will include interventions by PWC-BIM’s Global Energy Advisory Leader, Helena Lapera. , the Senior Principal Specialist Energy Transition, Measurement and Flow DNV, Henk Rizibus, member of the scientific team at The Next Pangea, Nerea Borja, and Director of Carbon Removal Technologies at Snam and Head of the NHRyA Project, Pere Margalef.
