Grupo Potencial begins replacing its fleet with a biodiesel truck

Grupo Potencial has begun replacing its fleet of diesel trucks with Scania vehicles adapted to use 100% biodiesel, a biofuel produced from vegetable oils and waste fats.

Since December 28, 2023, the first truck has been operating on the route between the Port of Paranagua (PR) and the company’s biodiesel plant, located in Lapa (PR).

Investments in the first phase of the project are estimated at R$26.4 million, of which R$20,000 was allocated to the adaptation of the vehicle that has entered circulation and the remainder towards the acquisition of 24 new models that will also be adapted to use biofuels.

According to the group, replacing fossil diesel consumption would reduce CO2 emissions per truck by 95%.

Engine adaptation allows operation on biodiesel and regular diesel, such as gasoline and ethanol-powered flex-fuel vehicles.

I’m looking for partners

In the second phase of the project, Potential, which owns the country’s largest biodiesel plant (900,000 cubic meters per year), intends to form partnerships with other automakers to convert the rest of the fleet, which includes more than 150 trucks.

Several product performance studies will be carried out in the fleet throughout 2024, says Carlos Eduardo Hammerschmidt, Vice President of Grupo Potencial.

“Our main goal is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and move the energy transition to the fuel sector. We started with a pilot unit, and in the second quarter of 2024, we should already have another 24 units running on biodiesel.
