Hexagon Purus and Hino Trucks introduce a new heavy electric truck

A product of the new long-term agreement between Hexagon Purus and Hino Trucks, valued at approximately $2 billion, Tern is designed to provide a smooth transition to electrification in the U.S. commercial vehicle sector. The Tern RC8 is manufactured at Hexagon Purus’ new facility in Dallas, Texas, and is scheduled for series production in late 2024.

The Tern RC8 is based on the Hino XL Series 4×2 chassis and is equipped with Hexagon Purus zero-emission technology, featuring proprietary battery systems, auxiliary units and power units. The Tern RC8 also features a Dana e-axle for optimal efficiency and battery cells supplied and manufactured by Panasonic Energy, initially in Japan before moving to De Soto, Kansas from 2026 onwards.

“The Tern RC8 delivers the comfort, reliability and safety that drivers and fleets want, and is specifically designed to be a highly practical truck for operators integrating zero-emission trucks into their fleets,” said Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus. “We are excited to offer a truck that embodies the endurance and efficiency of the Arctic Tern, famous for its light weight and long migratory journey – a reliable companion you can always count on.”

Key features of the Tern RC8 include:

A 100 percent battery-powered platform with an industry-leading short wheelbase of 165 inches

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is 68,000 lbs. Targeting applications at approximately 200 miles in regional city cycles, addressing 95 percent of use cases

The 269 kWh Dual Hexagon Purus Gen3 battery is assembled in a 750V and 538 kWh configuration, providing ample power and range for targeted duty cycles

Recharging rate 241 kW

Peak/continuous horsepower of 680 hp/494 hp

Peak torque is 38,350 ft/lbs.

Tern trucks will be available exclusively through the Tern dealer network and will utilize the Hino network to ensure full support and service. The launch is aligned with California’s Advanced Clean Fleets Regulation and gives fleets an excellent option to decarbonize their supply chain, especially in targeted applications such as major regional routes, food and beverage logistics and similar routes where tight turning radii and SUVs are popular. The structure provides practical benefits.

“Our partnership with Hexagon Purus brings a highly reliable Class 8, 4×2 tractor option to the electric truck market, meeting a wide range of applications,” added Glenn Ellis, President of Hino Trucks. “We are excited to see the launch of the TURN in California, where fleet electrification is essential.”
