Meteorologist Edgardo Escobar provided a detailed overview of current weather conditions in Salta, highlighting rainfall and the forecast for the next few days. There is an alert for the possibility of recording hail and snowfall in the high areas of the mountain range and Puna. Moreover, from Tuesday temperatures may exceed 30 degrees.
According to Escobar, 148 mm of rain has so far been recorded in Salta, of which 30 mm fell between yesterday and today, as of 9 am. The meteorologist explained, “This amount is what was expected, as the National Directorate of Meteorology’s quarterly forecasts indicated that rainfall would be slightly higher than the normal rate.”
The historical average for January is 197.1 mm, so the total so far is below this number, but rain is expected to continue during the month.
Meanwhile, the average normal rainfall for February is 147.3 mm, and for March is 197.3 mm, and is expected to be exceeded.
Alert for possible extreme events
Meteorologist Escobar also warned of a new weather condition that could affect the region in the coming hours. From noon today until 00:00 Monday, a storm watch has been issued. He added: “Coldfall, wind gusts, and an accumulated amount of rain ranging between 20 and 40 mm are expected. He explained that it is possible that snow will fall in the high areas of the Al-Buna mountain range, as happened a few days ago.”
pForecast for next week
Regarding temperatures, he stated that climatic conditions are changing rapidly. He pointed out that “the high pressure system affecting the center of the country will bring heat to the region, and as of Tuesday, temperatures in Salta may exceed 30 degrees.” This phenomenon, known as the “dome rising,” will prevent the entry of cold air coming from the south and will cause hot days in the region.
Compared to January 2024
Asked about the comparison with January last year, Escobar noted that so far in 2024, 207 mm of rain has fallen, which is above average. But he highlighted that last year there were also periods of decreased rainfall due to the presence of an air mass.
Recommendations to the community
In view of climate change, the meteorologist stressed the importance of staying informed of alerts and taking the necessary precautions in the face of unstable weather expected during the coming days. Then he recommended taking caution, especially in the high areas of the governorate. “It is important to pay attention to possible river floods and landslides,” he noted.
In the event of thunderstorms, activities such as being in swimming pools or near rivers should be avoided, and it is necessary to stay away from metal objects and exposed structures.
