McLaren electric mountain bikes are the most powerful bikes you can buy

The first McLaren electric cars are here. They only have two wheels instead of four.

The British supercar specialists have just unveiled a new range of electric mountain bikes. The range consists of two distinct models, the Extreme and Sport, which the automaker claims are the most powerful e-bikes you can legally buy on the streets.

We’ve seen plenty of automakers team up with bike makers in the past, but McLaren’s new two-wheelers are entirely an in-house affair. In fact, the brand entrusted the design of the two bikes to the same team that designed the Artura hybrid car. Supercars and bikes don’t have much in common from a design standpoint, but you can definitely see traces of the former in the carbon fiber construction and liberal use of orange accents. It should also be said that although both the Extreme and Sport look like rugged bikes, they are nowhere near as good as some of the more rugged mountain bikes out there.

But the big story here is the specially tuned mid-drive engine that powers the flagship Extreme and Sport versions. The motor, which both bikes share, produces 600 watts of normal power, 852 watts of peak power, and 119 pound-feet of torque. This output makes this engine the most powerful currently on the market and allows both models to reach all-electric speeds of up to 20 mph. Sure, that’s a lot slower than the Artura, which tops out at 205 mph, but it’s pretty fast for an e-bike. If all this sounds like overkill, don’t worry. Both bikes are available with motors that produce 250 watts of natural power.

The Extreme and Sport are similar electric mountain bikes, but there are key differences between them. Both models can be driven on streets, trails, and everything in between, but the Extreme comes equipped with a full suspension that makes it more suitable for off-roading. Meanwhile, the Sportster is the more versatile of the two and has a more streamlined aesthetic. Whichever version you choose, it will come with a handlebar-mounted display with graphics like those in the cockpit of a supercar, five different driving modes, and a set of Pirelli all-terrain tires.

McLaren is now selling the Extreme and Sport electric mountain bikes through a dedicated website. The Sport starts at $7,950 and can go up to $8,950, while the Extreme starts at $10,950 and can go up to $11,950. Each model will be available in limited numbers.
