The MTA’s launch of 60 new electric buses represents a big step toward sustainable transportation in New York City, supported by advanced charging infrastructure and a commitment to a completely net-zero emissions fleet by 2040.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced it has unveiled a fleet of 60 new electric buses, marking an important step toward promoting sustainable transportation across Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn. This initiative, part of the MTA’s ambitious plan to achieve a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2040, underscores its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
The newly introduced electric buses feature advanced lightweight electric traction systems capable of recovering up to 90% of energy during braking, thus maximizing energy efficiency and reducing brake wear.
These buses are funded largely by a $70 million allocation from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), including $20 million from the bipartisan Infrastructure Act, and are equipped with autonomous pantograph dispensers. Installed at the Grand Avenue bus station in Queens, these innovative chargers automatically connect to buses via roof-mounted arms, facilitating fast charging.
“Every mile on these buses means one less ride on fossil fuels — an every-day victory for sustainability,” said Janno Lieber, MTA Chairman and CEO. “As the largest public bus system in North America, we are leading the way toward a greener future, revolutionizing public transportation, one electric bus at a time.”

Looking ahead, the MTA plans to welcome an additional 205 electric buses starting in late 2025, with negotiations underway to acquire another 265 buses by 2027. This expansion aims to bring electric buses to a total of 11 depots, strengthening New York City’s commitment to sustainability. Public transportation.
