MTA showcases new electric bus fleet for BK, Queens and Staten Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The MTA will implement 60 new electric buses that will operate on routes in Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The announcement also includes the installation of 17 new bus charging points at the Grand Avenue Bus Depot in Queens, officials said.

Another 46 charging points are under construction in Brooklyn’s East New York Herkimer neighborhood and the Charleston facility on Staten Island, and are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

In addition, an on-street charging point will serve buses that need to “charge” their batteries between daily trips, which are almost entirely located under the Williamsburg Bridge plaza.

The new buses feature lightweight electric propulsion systems that allow the buses to recover up to 90 percent of energy while braking. This regenerative braking reduces brake wear and increases energy efficiency, officials said.

“These new electric buses will play a key role in ensuring New Yorkers get where they are going safely and sustainably,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “Zero-emission buses are becoming a defining feature of our transportation systems, demonstrating the importance of building healthy, environmentally friendly cities.”

The MTA aims to operate a 100 percent zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

The second phase of this electric bus initiative — costing $188 million — will bring an additional 220 overhead charging systems to Grand Avenue and four other depots in Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn.

“Every mile these buses travel means one less mile traveled using fossil fuels, which is a win every day for sustainability,” said Janno Lieber, MTA Chairman and CEO.. “As the largest public bus system in North America, we are leading the way toward a greener future, revolutionizing public transportation, one electric bus at a time.”
