In the middle of winter, keeping the house warm without raising the heating bill becomes a concern for many families. According to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), it is possible to achieve balance by adjusting the temperature in the home and adopting certain simple habits.
Other tricks to save heating
The ideal temperature for heating your home
OCU indicates that a temperature between 19°C and 21°C is sufficient to maintain thermal comfort during the day. At night, they advise reducing it to between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius, because the body needs less temperature when sleeping.
Furthermore, the question often arises as to whether it is better to turn the heating off and on or keep it at low intensity. The most efficient and economical option, according to OCU, is to turn it off when it’s not needed, especially at night or when no one is home.
To keep a home warm without turning up the thermostat, OCU suggests placing weather barriers on doors and windows, ventilating in the morning with the curtains drawn, decorating with dark carpeting and curtains that retain solar heat, and disinfecting radiators to improve their operation.

Staying warmer at home helps reduce energy consumption
Proper boiler maintenance is also key. For example, performing regular reviews can save you up to 15% annually. They also advise avoiding covering heating devices with furniture or clothing that impedes the spread of hot air.
Finally, staying warmer at home and turning down the thermostat is another practical and effective money-saving gesture. “Instead of being under-supplied by a home at 24°C, lowering the thermostat to 21°C can reduce consumption by up to 20%,” the OCU points out.
Adopting these recommendations not only benefits your wallet, but also benefits the environment, by reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
