The Porto Itapua plant, located on the northern coast of Santa Catarina, will be the first in Brazil to include carbon credits in operations. Starting in 2024, the carbon neutrality project is a measure to offset customers’ carbon emissions.
According to the station, the project will be implemented with a group specialized in environmental management, and will allow customers to purchase carbon credits to offset emissions.
“These credits, arising from forest conservation or reforestation, are certified by Ambipar,” explains Porto Itapuá’s Director of Operations, Technology and Environment, Sergini Pessoa Rosa Junior.
The inclusion of carbon credits is in line with the new energy policy adopted by Puerto Itapuá in 2023. Since last year, the plant has begun consuming energy only from renewable sources, in new contracts.
Transactions are certified by I-REC(e), a global renewable energy attribute tracking system designed to facilitate consumer accounting of attributable renewable energy.
Puerto Itapuá is investing in solar energy
Another project carried out by Porto Itaboa is the development of a system to capture solar energy, with panels already installed to study how much sunlight falls in the municipality.
“The data we have today relates to the total area in which we are located, so we need to better understand the characteristics of this energy source in our municipality,” highlights the plant manager.
