PSA from PPL: Be safe and be alert near electricity | health

PPL Electric Utilities is reminding its customers to keep electrical safety at the top of their to-do lists as they take advantage of the warm weather and extra daylight to complete exterior and interior home projects this spring and summer.

PPL Electric employees make safety their top priority during every job, and we want to make sure that our customers always stay safe around electricity and stay aware of potential electrical safety hazards.

In recognition of National Electrical Safety Month, PPL Electric provides the following electrical safety tips to its customers.

Outdoor safety

  • Use only electrical products marked for outdoor use.
  • Always be careful when working near power lines.
  • Always be aware of the location of overhead and underground power lines to avoid injury.
  • Hold extension ladders parallel to the ground and check the location of overhead power lines before placing the ladder upright.
  • Call 811 to locate underground utility lines at least three full business days before doing any digging.

Internal safety

  • Check electrical cords for frayed spots or frayed wires and replace damaged wires.
  • Never overload an extension cord or connect one extension cord to another. Connecting too many appliances or appliances to a single extension cord may cause it to overheat, which can cause a fire.
  • Do not run extension cords under rugs or rugs. This can cause them to overheat and catch fire. Avoid placing it under furniture, as this may damage the insulating cover.
  • Keep flammable materials away from lamps and heaters. Place electric space heaters away from well-traveled areas to prevent others from tripping or falling over them.
  • Install safety covers over unused outlets to prevent young children from playing with them.
