SEAT SA will double its capacity to self-generate renewable energy with 39,000 new solar panels. With the expansion of Seat Al Soul, the company’s photovoltaic power station, the solar panels will be installed on an area of 233,000 square meters in its three production centers: Martorell, El Prat and Barcelona. This project reaffirms SEAT SA’s goal of decarbonising its production processes and its commitment to more sustainable mobility.
The new SEAT al Sol 2 solar facility will be one of the largest in Europe for self-consumption. The project will provide an additional 21 megawatts of energy and self-generate an estimated 29 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually. Enough electricity to fully charge 500,000 Cobra Burn cars. This clean energy will complement the use of certified green electricity from external sources in all of the company’s facilities, without generating carbon dioxide emissions.2.
“SEAT al Sol 2 confirms the goal of decarbonising our facilities and reinforces the importance of renewable energies as a competitive element in our industry. The expansion of the solar project is part of SEAT SA’s transformation, the most ambitious in our history, towards a new era of electric mobility.“, He made it clear Markus Haupt, Executive Vice President, Production and Logistics, SEAT SA

Seat Al Soul 2 initiative
This expansion reinforces the success of Seat Al Soul, which has been operating since 2013 and will continue to operate in parallel. This installation, which has a total of 53,000 photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the factory workshops and storage areas for cars manufactured at the Martorell plant, provides 11 MW of power and self-generates 17 GWh of renewable energy every year. With SEAT Al Sol 2, the company’s solar project will produce a total of 32 MW of power and 46 GWh of clean energy annually starting in 2024.
The new photovoltaic power plants, which will be developed in collaboration with CONECTA2 ENERGÍA, an independent Spanish energy marketing company, are scheduled to become operational in 2024. In addition to their installation in the three production centers, SEAT al Sol 2 will be expanded to employee parking spaces in Martorell, Which increases the use of solar panels to generate self-renewable energy.
The most ambitious transformation in SEAT SA’s history
SEAT SA is undertaking the biggest transformation in its history. The company’s plant in Martorell, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, will produce fully electric cars from 2025 for Cupra and Volkswagen. To achieve this, SEAT SA has designed an industrial, organizational and cultural transformation plan that reflects the company’s firm commitment to sustainability, including strategic initiatives such as the development of self-generation systems for renewable energy to reduce the company’s environmental impact.
SEAT SA’s decarbonisation program sets out a roadmap to reduce CO2 emissions2 Throughout the vehicle value chain taking into account its complete life cycle, which includes production, use and end of the vehicle’s life. The company’s goal is to reduce these emissions by 50% in 2030, compared to 2018, as a first step to becoming a carbon neutral company in 2050, in line with the Volkswagen Group’s decarbonization goals. The main pillars for achieving this are the electrification of cars, which allows reducing the carbon footprint during their use, the use of green energy to charge electric vehicles, a commitment to the circular economy, as well as the decarbonization of the production stage. .
