NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – Middle Tennessee Electric has had issues at its Henpeck substation in Williamson County, due to snake raids.
MTE said it had experienced four outages in the past 10 days due to snakes.
“Basically, the snakes climbed up the steel structure and then onto the energized equipment or lines. When they do that, they make a connection between the energized equipment and ground the circuit, causing the breakers to trip, causing a power outage. “This is like having a breaker trip in a breaker box In your home,” explains MTE.
Every time an outage occurs a crew is sent to the substation where they will remove the snake carcass and reset the tripped crusher. This process usually takes less than an hour.
“So far, our wildlife rangers have not been very effective in dealing with snakes; We also tried 3 different snake repellents on the ground inside the substation. “We contacted some pest control companies, but they are not licensed to handle wildlife, so we contacted specialist wildlife control experts as well as the TWRA to get their input,” MTE said.
MTE apologizes to customers for the inconvenience this unique situation is causing in the area.
