The Junta of Castile and León presented the draft “Demographic and Regional Sustainability Strategy” to the European Union in Paris, within the framework of the event organized by the OECD on population migration, presenting the actions taken by the regional government in population-related matters. Demographic challenge.
The Director General of Housing, Architecture, Regional and Urban Planning, Maria Pardo, attended the event in Paris, accompanied by the Director of the European Union Castile and Leon Office, to participate in one of the discussion tables.
The project consists of two pillars: First, study data and compare situations between selected countries to generate new indicators that are relevant and internationally comparable. These indicators revolve around four scenarios: multi-level governance, public finance, and service provision and infrastructure.
The second axis explores available policies, most notably adaptation measures, as well as mitigation measures, in order to prepare a document that includes all good policy practices for managing population decline.
Castilla and León were invited to the event, in which specialists from several OECD member states gathered, to participate in a table discussion on multi-level guidelines for governance in situations of demographic transitions.
The session discussed the draft “Demographic and Territorial Sustainability Strategy,” which is currently in the development stage and which was recently presented to the Demographic Action Council, which is a body for participation and consultation on this subject. It is a strategic planning tool that defines, based on the diagnosis, objectives and measures to be adopted, the ideal lines of public policies to address the challenge we face, in this case, demographic and territorial sustainability.
The Director has developed the four main themes included in the strategy: commitment to multi-level governance to ensure coordinated action in the region; Promoting rural spaces as places of quality of life through public and private infrastructure, services and equipment; Commitment to focused, interconnected entrepreneurship that leverages internal resources; Generating synergy between rural and urban areas, promoting rural values in cities and enhancing their connection that improves both environments.
