Udhagamandalam (Tamil Nadu):

A male elephant died due to electrocution on Saturday in a village near Kotagiri in Nilgiris district when it accidentally hit an overhead power transmission line, authorities said.

The incident occurred when the 15-year-old elephant tried to uproot a tree, and in the process, a high-tension power cable broke nearby, and the elephant was electrocuted to death, according to Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials.

A team of officials from TANGEDCO, the state-run electricity generation and distribution company, and the Revenue Department inspected the site and a team of veterinarians conducted a post-mortem and stated electrocution as the cause of the animal’s death.
