The solar-powered refrigerator does not require electricity and can operate for 40 hours without electricity

In privileged parts of the world, it’s easy to take for granted the conveniences that define modern life—constant electricity, reliable refrigeration, and an abundance of technological conveniences. However, a large portion of the world’s population struggles to access what many consider to be basic necessities. This disparity highlights a broader issue: that our amenities, supported by unsustainable practices, contribute to long-term environmental degradation. EasyFreeze finds a good balance between the two and embraces more sustainable alternatives, which is not just a nod to the past but a necessary step towards a viable future.

Designer: Amped Innovation

Imagine you live in Lagos, Nigeria, where daily power outages can last for hours. In such conditions, a conventional refrigerator is almost useless and, therefore, very few people own it. However, Amped Innovation, a forward-thinking startup, has developed a game-changing solution: EasyFreeze, a solar-powered refrigerator designed to work efficiently even with an unreliable grid or completely off-grid. This innovation is particularly transformative for regions rich in solar energy but poor in infrastructure.

The EasyFreeze is a precisely engineered fridge and freezer capable of cooling in less than 20 minutes (up to 8°C) and freezing in less than an hour (0°C). Unlike typical cold storage solutions, it maintains its temperature for up to 40 hours during power outages or on cloudy days, ensuring reliability even in the toughest conditions.

One important innovation within the EasyFreeze is its use of an “ice battery” instead of traditional lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, although popular, are expensive, prone to overheating, have a shorter life, and pose safety risks. EasyFreeze’s ice battery system uses ice packs built into the refrigerator’s walls to absorb and release heat. These bags are cooled by solar panels during the day or by grid power when available, allowing the refrigerator to stay cold for long periods without active power. This system not only enhances safety and durability, but also reduces costs significantly.

Amped Innovation is rolling out EasyFreeze across more than a dozen countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, with a focus on hard-to-reach communities. Small businesses, such as convenience stores, benefit greatly from the ability to sell cold drinks and ice, while medical clinics and hospitals can safely store medications and vaccines at specific temperatures. The refrigerator’s design prioritizes off-grid efficiency, with special circuitry, software and mechanical designs to deliver city-like performance in rural areas.

One of the distinguishing features of EasyFreeze is its durability. Unlike many other solar refrigerators that break down within a year of use, the EasyFreeze is built to last. Equipment is assembled locally to avoid expensive import duties and reduce costs, ensuring affordability without compromising quality. This comprehensive approach to product design and distribution makes EasyFreeze not only effective, but also economically feasible.

EasyFreeze uses R-600a refrigerant, which has a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and very low global warming potential (GWP). It’s at least 38% more energy efficient than other options on the market, thanks to its powerful 225W compressor and 75mm thick closed-cell polyurethane insulation. These features ensure the fastest cooling times and longest period of autonomy, maintaining efficient cold storage up to 18 times longer than other freezers during a power outage.

Although the EasyFreeze device is not cheap, with retailers charging around $900, it remains affordable for middle-class families in countries like Nigeria. This price point reflects a commitment to quality and long-term affordability, prioritizing total cost of ownership over the initial purchase price. Amped Innovation’s focus on high-quality materials and efficient design means that EasyFreeze offers unparalleled value, making it accessible to a wider audience.

EasyFreeze’s benefit extends beyond developing regions. In the wake of the 2023 Maui wildfires, the refrigerator gained attention from Hawaii residents. With Hawaii’s exceptionally high electricity costs, EasyFreeze offers a payback period of just two years, making it an economically attractive solution for both disaster resilience and everyday use.

While we acknowledge the privileges that many of us enjoy, it is crucial that we recognize the urgent need for sustainable innovations that can bridge the gap for those less fortunate. EasyFreeze exemplifies how thoughtful, environmentally friendly design can change people’s lives, providing reliable cooling in areas with unreliable power. Amped Innovation’s focus on efficiency, durability and affordability makes EasyFreeze a traditional choice for refrigeration in parts of Africa and Asia that receive plenty of sunlight. This amazing device not only meets the immediate needs of its users, but also paves the way for a more sustainable future.
