Democratic Progressive Party (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad today said he was concerned about rising unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir, even after the abrogation of Article 370. Azad questioned the narrative of the PDP and NCP – who were saying that these elections were not about development. He said: “If you cannot provide jobs, water and electricity, then why are you in politics?” To gain wealth?
Arrest of party workers
Everywhere I go, I find people complaining that their children were arrested this morning, yesterday, or the day before yesterday. Such harassment should stop completely during elections. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman, DPAP
He added that these basic issues were crucial to the well-being of the people and claimed that the political action platform was committed to tackling unemployment, improving education and ensuring basic necessities for all.
“The leaders of the People’s Democratic Party and the National Congress Party claim that it is not about Billy and Bani. If so, what will the MP do with the money he gets? Will he use it for himself? These parties have only exploited people with false promises and slogans and have done nothing on the ground,” Azad said. The DPAP chief said the acts of harassment of political workers by the administration were alarming. “We should not harass any worker unless we have solid evidence. “This is an attack on democracy,” Azad said.
Jammu and Kashmir has limited resources and now faces the additional challenge of “outsiders” demanding jobs reserved for locals, Azad said. “The impact of militancy on education has left many young people without job opportunities,” he said.
